WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez (FL-28) voted for Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) to be the next Speaker of the House and issued the following statement. Rep. Gimenez is the only career firefighter paramedic in Congress and is proud to have Mike Johnson, the son of a firefighter, as Speaker of the House.

“It’s been 22 days since the Gang of 8 joined with all the Democrats in the House to remove our duly elected Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Their irresponsible and shortsighted actions plunged our Congress and our country into chaos,” said Rep. Gimenez. “As Republicans we have come together to elect Representative Mike Johnson of Shreveport Louisiana as our new Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mike is honorable, he’s the son of a firefighter, and a straightforward leader who can unite our Republican Conference. I look forward to continue working closely with Speaker Johnson to deliver results for the people of South Florida.”

Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the beautiful Florida Keys. He is the only career firefighter paramedic and Cuban-born Member of the 118th Congress, having fled his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover of the island. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the Homeland Security Committee, and the Select Committee on China.
