MIAMI, FL - Today, Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez (FL-28) released the following statement in response to President Donald J. Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum on United States policy toward Communist Cuba:

“President Trump’s new Cuba policy is a strong and necessary step to economically suffocate the criminal regime in Havana. By restricting travel and cutting off the flow of U.S. dollars to the island, the United States is making it clear: we will no longer bankroll a dictatorship that represses its people, exports instability across the region, and aligns itself with our greatest adversaries — including China, Russia, and Iran.

"For too long, the Cuban regime has relied on remittances, tourism, and access to our economy to stay afloat. That era of indulgence must come to an end.

"I applaud President Trump for listening to our calls and for prioritizing freedom, human rights, and national security over the appeasement of an illegitimate regime. I look forward to continuing to work closely with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to support the Cuban people in their fight for freedom.”
