WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez issued the following statement after House Democrats introduced legislation to expand the court:

“This is a reckless, radical, and dangerous proposal by the left. As a Cuban exile who fled the communist Castro regime, I know firsthand that this is a power grab with the motive to centralize power in the hands of a few ideologues. Packing the courts is a tactic used by brutal dictators in places like Venezuela, which packed the courts and the legislative branch to consolidate Maduro’s power.

This proposal to fundamentally rebalance our judicial system in favor of one political ideology should not only be opposed, but it must be condemned to the fullest extent. The tactic of upending political institutions to drive pure radical ideology is being replicated throughout other oppressive governments in Latin America such as Nicaragua and Bolivia. I will fight to my last breath the attempts by so-called progressives to overtake our government in such a militant manner.”
