WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 24, 2025, Congressman Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) was appointed by the Speaker of the House to the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents. The Board consists of the Vice President, Chief Justice, Members of the House and Senate, and private citizens.

As a Regent, Congressman Gimenez will oversee over $1 billion of the Smithsonian Institution's budget that includes current establishments and future projects.

“I am deeply honored to have been appointed by my friend, Speaker Mike Johnson, to serve on the Smithsonian Board of Regents,” said Congressman Carlos Giménez. “As the only Cuban-born Member of Congress, I look forward to working with my fellow board members to guarantee that the Hispanic, Cuban American, and Cuban exile experiences are accurately portrayed and represented in the Smithsonian Institution’s collection. The Smithsonian Institution is a crown jewel of our nation and should be a bastion of patriotism and American pride for millions of people across our country and the world to enjoy.

Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the beautiful Florida Keys. He is the only Cuban-born Member of the 119th Congress, having fled his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover of the island. He is the first career firefighter paramedic elected to the House of Representatives and served as the former Fire Chief of the City of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County.
