WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez (FL-26) was selected to serve as a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee (SST) for the 117th Congress. The SST has jurisdiction over federal agencies involved in non-defense research and development, which includes key science-related agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

“I am honored to have been selected to serve on the House Science, Space, and Technology committee. As South Florida continues to expand as a major tech hub across our country and throughout the Americas, I will work to ensure this committee pushes forward policies that will support the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of American technology. Places like South Florida are key to ensuring America has the best tools in research and development to keep our competitive edge in a dynamic and ever-growing global economy. Working on issues at the intersection of cybersecurity, space, and scientific research and development, the work this committee will be doing is incredibly important to countering influence from malign actors such as China,” Gimenez said.

SST Ranking Member Frank Lucas (OK-3), the top Republican on the committee, pointed to Gimenez’s support of an all-of-the-above approach to American energy production, focusing on research and deployment of new, clean energy technologies that ensures all Americans have access to affordable and reliable energy sources.

“I’m pleased to welcome Congressman Gimenez to the House Science Committee. He is a strong supporter of a comprehensive, all-of-the-above approach to clean energy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions while keeping energy costs low for Americans. He also recognizes China\'s increasingly competitive position in science, the danger this poses, and the necessity of investment in science and technology to meet this challenge. I’m looking forward to working with him this Congress on solutions that will protect American global competitiveness,” Lucas said.

Gimenez will be joined by 7 colleagues from the Republican freshman class. The first committee this Congress is set to begin the first week of March.
