Dear Friends,

For the first time in 64 years, I went back to my native Cuba. I traveled to Guantanamo Bay as part of a Congressional Delegation to see firsthand the Department of Homeland Security migrant facilities and meet with our brave service members and law enforcement officials.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I witnessed firsthand how President Trump’s leadership is restoring law and order in our communities while strengthening Guantanamo’s role as a place for repatriating violent criminals who have entered the United States illegally. This mission is critical to ensuring our nation’s security, enforcing the rule of law, and protecting the American people.

The U.S. House of Representatives Unanimously Advanced Rep. Gimenez’s bill, HR 1166 The Decoupling from Foreign Adversarial Battery Dependence Act

The United States must decouple from Communist China in all facets of our lives. The Decoupling from Foreign Adversarial Battery Dependence Act prohibits the Department of Homeland Security from procuring batteries from companies with ties to the People's Republic of China. With the unanimous passage of this bill we reaffirm and continue to decouple ourselves from Communist China but also call on our own domestic industries to produce critically important materials. We must proactively stay ahead and address these threats that undermine the US supply chain and leave our national security at risk. We were already late to recognize the PRC’s battery threat, and we cannot afford to do it again. I urge my Senate colleagues to pass this bill so we can get it to the President's desk as soon as possible.

House Republicans Avert a Government Shutdown

The House has voted to keep the government open, now Senate Democrats need to do their part. In the House, the Continuing Resolution passed with bipartisan support. This important piece of legislation included a $6 billion increase for our nation’s defense, $1.6 billion of it for pay increase for junior enlisted service members. If the government shuts down, know that it will be in the hands of Senate Democrats.

Key budget highlights:

  • Supporting President Trump’s efforts to protect our borders by providing $485 million for detention facilities, transportation, and deportation costs
  • $1.6 billion for junior enlisted service members to receive a pay raise
  • $2.5 billion for the construction of 28 new state of the art U.S. Navy ships
  • Pulls over $20 billion in unnecessary funding to the Internal Revenue Services (IRS)
  • Provides $425 million for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program for low-income seniors and $7.6 billion for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children

We are so proud of our Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez who is working tirelessly to streamline, modernize, and provide the best customer service to our residents. Lourdes and I toured one of his new offices & got to see so many of the services being offered to the community.

Celebrating 100 years of The Biltmore

I am honored to have dedicated a Congressional Record to The Biltmore Hotel to commemorate their 100th anniversary.

Alongside the Miami community, we celebrated a century of this historic and iconic national landmark. I wish The Biltmore another century of cherished memories and success.
