WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Carlos Gimenez was appointed to the House Homeland Security Committee’s Task Force on Enhancing Security for Special Events in the United States.
Chaired by Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), the task force is charged with overseeing federal security preparations for several major international events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.
With oversight of key Department of Homeland Security agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, FEMA, and TSA, the task force will conduct site visits, hold hearings, and support the implementation of President Trump’s FIFA Security Task Force.
“The Task Force on Enhancing Security for Special Events sends a clear message: we’re leaving nothing to chance,” said Congressman Carlos Gimenez. “As the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, I led efforts to secure global events that drew millions of visitors from around the world. With the U.S. set to host large-scale events, like FIFA 2026, the 2028 Olympics, and America’s 250th birthday, we must act now. Ensuring a safe and successful execution will require strong coordination among federal, state, and local partners so that every traveler and every community can enjoy these celebrations safely and confidently.”

Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the beautiful Florida Keys. He is the only Cuban-born Member of the 119th Congress, having fled his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover of the island. He is the first career firefighter-paramedic elected to the House of Representatives and served as the former Fire Chief of the City of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County. Rep. Gimenez serves as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, the Armed Services Committee, and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
