From the United States Congress, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to President Edmundo González and Vice President María Corina Machado of Venezuela.
On January 10th, Dictator Nicolás Maduro, clinging to power, blatantly violated the Venezuelan constitution and disregarded the voices of millions who voted him out of office. Now, more than ever, the Venezuelan people, along with the exile community, need our unwavering solidarity and support.
The day prior, as mass protests erupted across Venezuela and around the world, the Maduro regime responded with brutal suppression. Opposition leader María Corina Machado was shot at and arrested amidst the chaos, but we are relieved and overjoyed to see her now safe.
Nicolás Maduro is a serial criminal with a $25 million bounty for his arrest, and it is imperative that he is brought to justice immediately. Nevertheless, I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s (R-FL) H.R. 268. This bill will increase the bounty to $100 million.
In just one week, with President Trump returning to the White House and Marco Rubio designated to serve as Secretary of State, we anticipate a new era of American foreign policy. One that stands firmly against dictators and champions those fighting for freedom and democracy.
To all Venezuelans, don’t back down from the fight against tyranny until we have a free Venezuela.
Sincerely,
Your Congressman, Carlos A. Gimenez
U.S. House Advances the Laken Riley Act
Just last year at 22 years old, Laken Riley was brutally murdered by an undocumented migrant that already had a rap sheet. The murder had already been charged with endangering a minor, drivers license violation, and theft before he heinously attacked Laken Riley. The woke policies in New York City allowed local law enforcement officials to release the murder before ICE would take him into custody.
Liberal policies of sanctuary cities have failed hundreds, including Laken Riley. That is why the first bill the House took up in the 119th Congress and the first of many House Republican immigration reform legislation was H.R. 20 - Laken Riley Act. This bipartisan bill, which is set to pass the U.S. Senate and to be signed into law, will require ICE to detain and take custody of any illegal migrant that has been arrested, charged, or convicted of theft. If these basic steps were taken by our cities against convicted criminal illegal migrants, Laken Riley would still be alive today.
Congressman Carlos Gimenez Congratulates Sheriff Codero-Stutz
Miami-Dade County has a new Sheriff in town.
I want to congratulate my dear friend Rosie Cordero-Stutz on being sworn in as our first elected sheriff in 60 years and first woman and Hispanic to hold the position. Sheriff Codero-Stutz has been with the Miami-Dade police department for nearly 30 years. Rising from patrol officer to assistant director, she has what it takes to run the largest law enforcement agency in the Southeastern United States.
Congressman Carlos Gimenez Congratulates Clerk Barquin
I want to congratulate Juan Barquin on being sworn in as the clerk of the court and comptroller for Miami-Dade County.
Clerk Barquin began his career in the public defenders’ office and will now oversee the fourth largest judicial circuit in the nation. As the watchdog for public records and taxpayer money, I have all the confidence that he will continue to do an excellent job.
